What Happens During a Four-Round Chess Tournament?

If your child enjoys chess but has never participated in a tournament, you may be wondering what the day will actually look like.

At the Atlantis Chess Tournament, students ages 5–17 will play four organized chess matches throughout the day in a welcoming environment designed for different chess levels.

Four Rounds. Four Different Opponents.

Your child will play four chess matches during the tournament.

For each round, players will be paired with another student at a similar chess level. After the match is complete, they will be paired again for the next round.

By the end of the tournament, your child will have had the opportunity to play against four different players.

This gives students a chance to experience different playing styles, make new decisions, and apply what they learn from one game to the next.

Why Chess Level Matters

When registering, parents will be asked to identify their child’s chess level.

This helps Atlantis Chess Club organize players with others who have similar experience.

Whether your child is a beginner, still developing their skills, or already comfortable with tournament play, all chess levels are welcome.

No previous tournament experience is required.

Learning From Every Game

Not every chess match will go exactly as planned—and that is part of the experience.

After each game, students have another opportunity to reset, prepare for a new opponent, and make different decisions.

At the chessboard, your child learns to focus, plan, and make thoughtful decisions.

Tournament play also gives students an opportunity to practice patience, sportsmanship, confidence, and respect for their opponents.

A Welcoming Tournament Experience

The Atlantis Chess Tournament is about more than sitting down for four matches.

Students will check in, prepare for their rounds, interact with other young chess players, and take part in a full day of organized chess.

Coaches and tournament support will be available throughout the day, while families can use designated waiting areas between and during rounds.
