Is Your Child Ready for Their First Chess Tournament?

For many children, enjoying chess at home, at school, or in a chess club can be the first step toward trying something new: a chess tournament.

If your child enjoys chess but has never competed before, the Atlantis Chess Tournament is designed to give them an opportunity to experience organized tournament play in a welcoming environment.

No previous tournament experience is required.

What Happens at a Chess Tournament?

At the Atlantis Chess Tournament, your child will play four chess matches during the day.

For each round, players will be paired with another child at a similar chess level. After the match is complete, they will be paired with a different player for the next round until all four rounds are finished.

This gives students the opportunity to play against several different opponents while experiencing the structure of tournament chess.

Beginners Are Welcome

Your child does not need to be an advanced chess player to participate.

The tournament welcomes students ages 5–17 at different chess levels, from beginners to more experienced players.

When registering, parents will be asked to identify their child’s chess level. This information helps Atlantis Chess Club organize players with others who have similar experience.

For a child who has never competed before, this can be their opportunity to experience their first chess tournament.

What Can Your Child Learn?

A tournament gives children an opportunity to use skills that extend beyond knowing how the chess pieces move.

At the chessboard, your child learns to focus, plan, and make thoughtful decisions.

They also experience what it means to wait patiently for their turn, respect an opponent, respond to unexpected moves, and continue playing even when a game becomes challenging.

Winning can be exciting, but learning how to compete with focus and sportsmanship is also an important part of the experience.

What Can Parents Expect?

From check-in through the final round, the goal is to provide families with a welcoming and organized tournament experience.

While students compete, families will have designated areas where they can relax, enjoy light refreshments, get some work done, or observe the tournament.

Coaches and tournament support will also be available throughout the day to help guide the experience.
