Building Focus One Move at a Time
Chess asks students to pay attention. They must watch what their opponent is doing, recognize changes on the board, remember what they have learned, and think before moving. Over time, this creates repeated opportunities to practice concentration in a structured and enjoyable environment.
There are no shortcuts on the chessboard. Students learn that paying attention matters.
Learning to Plan Ahead
A strong chess move is rarely about what happens immediately. Players begin learning to ask:
- What happens if I make this move?
- What might my opponent do next?
- What am I trying to accomplish?
- Is there a better option?
That process encourages students to think beyond the present moment. Planning becomes part of the game—and one of the lessons students can carry with them beyond the chessboard.
Making Thoughtful Decisions
Chess also gives young people a safe place to make decisions and experience the results.
Sometimes a plan works. Sometimes a piece is lost. Sometimes a student realizes there was a better move.
Then they get another opportunity.
Students learn to reflect, adjust, and continue playing.
That ability to make a decision, learn from the outcome, and try again is an important part of growth.
Confidence, Patience and Sportsmanship
Winning is exciting, but learning how to compete respectfully matters too. Through lessons, guided match play, tournament preparation, and interaction with other players, students practice patience, sportsmanship, problem-solving, and confidence.
St. Lucie County Parks & Recreation has also recognized chess as an activity that can help young people develop critical thinking, problem-solving, concentration, sportsmanship, strategic thinking, patience, and confidence.

Atlantis Chess Club provides youth chess opportunities in Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce while continuing to build connections throughout the Treasure Coast.
